Personal Finances 2
PACKAGING INFORMATION FOR
SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTORS AND BBS SYSOPs
INTRODUCTION:
Personal Finances 2 is copyrighted software and may only be
distributed as outlined in the license. There is no intent in
the current license to restrict shareware distributors other
than the requirement that only non-registered copies may be
distributed and all files that make up the package must be
distributed as part of the package.
PF2 has been designed to give shareware distributors flexibility in
packaging to meet their specific needs. PF2 is a large system and
has a sophisticated install program to ease the burden on the user.
It is necessary that all of the files be included in the package
for the install to be correctly performed. The files have been
design so that they may be packaged in a number of ways including
all diskette formats. The majority of files are already compressed
so using PKZIP or a similar program will not show any significant
decrease in size. The files that are provided with PF2 are:
INSTALL.EXE Install program.
DARCH.EXE File manager used by install program.
PF2READ.ME User information file including installation
instructions.
FILE_ID.DIZ PF2 description file for BBS's.
VENDOR.DOC This file describing packaging considerations
for shareware distributors and BBS SYSOPs.
LICENSE.TXT PF2 license and warranty.
PF2.001-PF2.017 PF2 program distribution files. These files
logically make up one large compressed file
which contains the PF2 program and data files.
INSTALLATION OVERVIEW:
The installation program manages the installation process for both
a new installation and an update to an existing installation. The
process it follows is:
1. Asks the user a set of questions on where the system is to be
installed and which options are desired.
2. Creates any directories required if they do not exist.
3. Calls on DARCH to unpack PF2.001-PF2.017 into the component
files in the PF2 program directory.
4. Then de-compresses the component files into the respective
program and data directories.
5. If it is an update to a registered system, it transfers the
registration number to the new system and makes any updates
required to user data files.
6. Removes all temporary files created in the installation
process.
The one requirement the installation process has is either all of
the installation files have to be in a single subdirectory on a
fixed disk/CD-ROM or INSTALL.EXE, DARCH.EXE, PF2READ.ME, FILE_ID.DIZ,
and LICENSE.TXT must be on the first diskette followed by PF2.001
through PF2.017 on the same or following diskettes IN SEQUENTIAL
ORDER. The following section gives examples for packaging on
different media.
PACKAGING RECOMMENDATIONS:
5 1/4 360KB diskettes: PF2 can be distributed on 4 360kb
diskettes. It is recommended that the
following files be placed on each of the
diskettes:
Diskette 1: INSTALL.EXE
DARCH.EXE
PF2READ.ME
FILE_ID.DIZ
VENDOR.DOC
LICENSE.TXT
PF2.001 through PF2.004
Diskette 2: PF2.005 through PF2.009
Diskette 3: PF2.010 through PF2.014
Diskette 4: PF2.015 through PF2.017
3 1/2 720KB diskettes: PF2 can be distributed on 2 720kb
diskettes. It is recommended that the
following files be placed on each of the
diskettes:
Diskette 1: INSTALL.EXE
DARCH.EXE
PF2READ.ME
FILE_ID.DIZ
VENDOR.DOC
LICENSE.TXT
PF2.001 through PF2.008
Diskette 2: PF2.009 through PF2.017
5 1/4 1.2MEG diskettes: All files will fit on a single diskette.
3 1/2 1.4MEG diskettes: All files will fit on a single diskette.
CD-ROM: PF2 may be packaged as a single zip file
or with the standard distribution files in a
single subdirectory. If the PF2 files are
placed in their own subdirectory, the user
will be able to do the install directly
from the disk since the PF2 install program
does not write back to the install disk.
BBS distribution: Because of the size of PF2, it is
recommended that it be packaged as three
files with PKZIP for downloading by
users. After downloading from a BBS, the
user would then unzip them into a
directory and run the install program
from there. The three files are:
PF2_XX_A.ZIP: INSTALL.EXE
DARCH.EXE
PF2READ.ME
FILE_ID.DIZ
VENDOR.DOC
LICENSE.TXT
PF2.001 through PF2.004
PF2_XX_B.ZIP: PF2.005 through PF2.010
FILE_ID.DIZ
PF2_XX_C.ZIP: PF2.011 through PF2.017
FILE_ID.DIZ
Note that xx is the version number; for
this version of PF2 it should be 20 if
you are to stay in sync with the files I
have uploaded to BBS's.
If you have any questions about the system, please contact Bruce W.
